Adriana Martin is from Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul, went to med school in Porto Alegre, and now does her residency at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH.

Why did you decide to come to the United States to study medicine?

I studied medicine at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. I always wanted to live abroad, speak different languages, and met people from other countries. During college, I began to consider doing my residency outside Brazil, and with some research, I saw that it was a very complex process. During my fourth year in school, I came to the United States for four months to see the healthcare system in a different country.  I also came to experience the lifestyle and to see if I would like the hospital. I ended up liking it a lot, everything was very well organized and structured with a big focus, one the residency part, in the education.

Back in Brazil, you learn a lot with “hands-on” experiences but I think it is important for you to have a good educational base and I saw that in the United States they were more focused on that.

Was the process to do your residency in Cleveland easy?

In order to be able to do your residency here, you need a very good resume, with certain experiences that would make you different from the average American. I did a lot of research and studied before I applied. When applying is a very structured process, through a website where you submit your test scores, resume, and some other things, such as recommendation letters, saying how you behaved on different internships you might have had.

Not every hospital accepts immigrants, so I decided to apply to every hospital.

You are very persistent in your dreams, right?

Yes, I arrived here in July of 2017, submitted my application in September, and was invited to many interviews. I spent more than 6 months participating in interviews. But all of this was my dream. I’m a very practical person, and I knew that but I had to move here. After I started working at Cleveland Clinic, I was sure of everything.

What do you do at the Cleveland Clinic?

I work with anesthesia, which is a high-risk field, but I think that it is better to work at the place I was trained. I like Cleveland a lot, and I hope to stay here for the future. I don’t see myself living in Brazil anymore. I had the opportunity to help a lot of Brazilians who look me up and ask questions about the residency process and my job.

Answer for your future kids: Who is Adriana?

I would say that Adriana is someone who is very determined, who fights for what she wants, and lives life to the fullest.
